Project Description

Recent developments in trans-genetic crop technology and associated changes in agricultural economics and policy are rapidly transforming the James River Lowlands and Missouri Coteau of central South Dakota from an expansive prairie-wetland system used for livestock ranching to a landscape dominated by tillage agriculture. This is phase nine of a project designed to protect wetland and grassland communities using a landscape level approach to planning to protect critical habitat for migratory birds. The project will acquire grassland and wetland easements in the Missouri Coteau and James River Lowlands Regions of South Dakota to protect 1,558 acres of grassland and wetland habitat for migratory birds. The easements will become part of the National Wildlife Refuge System under the Small Wetlands Acquisition Program.
