Land Acquisition / Protection
This project will conserve and restore sensitive and vulnerable coastal marsh and swamp habitat. It will directly impact a total of 3,339 acres of wetlands of which 1,694 acres are primarily fresh marsh and 1,645 acres of swamp/forested wetland habitat. It will help offset the dramatic coastal land loss occurring along Louisiana's coast. This project includes the fee-title acquisition of 1,783 acres of wetland adjacent to Salvador Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in St. Charles Parish, LA. The acquired property will be donated to the state of Louisiana and incorporated into the 30,000 acre WMA boundary. This project also includes the construction/dredging of three gaps in the Amite River Diversion Canal spoil bank that will restore 1,556 acres of forested wetlands. These habitat types support a multitude of resident, wintering, and migratory waterfowl and waterbirds as well as a diverse array of fish and wildlife species.
