Project Description

Dr. Saum received a B.A. in microbiology and genetics from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in environmental microbiology from the University of California, Riverside. As an undergraduate, she studied the inhibition of human viral pathogen replication by amino acids and proteins. During graduate school, Dr. Saum turned her focus to the environment and studied communities of oil-degrading bacteria found in beach sediment contaminated by oil still lingering from the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska.
