Project Description
This is phase seven of a project designed to protect wetland and grassland communities using a landscape level approach to planning in the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture to protect critical habitat for migratory birds. Ducks Unlimited, Inc. and its partners will acquire grassland and wetland easements in the Missouri Coteau and James River Lowlands Regions of South Dakota to protect 3,073 acres of grassland and 429 acres of wetland habitat for migratory birds. Waterfowl, particularly northern pintails, will benefit greatly from this project, as well as numerous species of shorebirds, wading birds, marsh birds and grassland songbirds. The easements will become part of the National Wildlife Refuge System under the Small Wetlands Acquisition Program.
