Project Description
In this sixth phase of the Missouri Coteau and James River Lowlands Prairie Pothole Joint Venter project, partners will use grant and matching funds to acquire easements on 6,243 acres of grassland and wetland habitat. The easements will become part of the National Wildlife Refuge System under the Small Wetlands Acquisition Program. Waterfowl, particularly Northern Pintails, will benefit, but numerous species of shorebirds, wading birds, marsh birds and other wetland-dependent wildlife, grassland songbirds and other grassland-dependent wildlife will also benefit. Valuable breeding, migration and, for some resident species, wintering habitat will be protected. Ancillary benefits include flood control, water quality maintenance, erosion control, tourism, economic diversity, carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas reduction, infrastructure protection and historical preservation.
