Project Description
This project will enhance the capabilities of project partners conducting stranding and rehabilitation activities in the region by supporting critical enhancement needs for Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN) response efforts that are not already being addressed through other funding sources (e.g., the NRDA Sea Turtle Early Restoration Project, and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund). The first component will provide support for critical needs and gaps (e.g., equipment and supplies and services) to enhance existing sea turtle response organizations and rehabilitation facilities. The project will provide support for responding to stranding events, recovering and necropsying dead stranded sea turtles to better understand mortality sources, and/or filling other identified critical needs and gaps in STSSN response coverage where sea turtles will benefit from increased response effort or capacity. The second component will enhance the capabilities of project partners conducting stranding and rehabilitation activities in the Gulf of Mexico by supporting the construction of a new rehabilitation facility on the upper Texas coast. The Texas TIG is contributing $2.5M for the construction of the Texas Rehabilitation Facility. Therefore, the Texas TIG authorized budget and all reporting will be included in the second component of this Regionwide project (Portal ID 305).
