Project Description
Dr. Oliver received her Ph.D. in Ecology in 2020 from the joint doctoral program with San Diego State University and the University of California, Davis. She received her B.S. in Microbiology from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2015. Her doctoral research examined the variation in microbial carbon use efficiency across a soil chronosequence to better understand how environmental and biological parameters affected the ability of microbes to efficiently cycle carbon. After her Ph.D., she did post-doctoral work at the Noble Research Institute in Oklahoma on the effect of grazing land management on soil and ecosystem health. At LSU, she was a member of the Louisiana STEM Research Scholars Program, which funded her to participate in undergraduate research that focused on microbes living in frozen environments. This led to her doing a National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She was also part of an interdisciplinary field team to quantify microbial activity within the Matanuska glacier. Dr. Oliver is interested in using science-based evidence to inform environmental policy and management decisions to make coastal communities more resilient to natural disasters.
