Project Description

Dr. Lacey Huffling is an Associate Professor in the College of Education at Georgia Southern. Her research examines the affordances and barriers historically marginalized communities experience in acquiring science and environmental literacy in K-20 educational settings. She also works alongside scientists and engineers in addressing the barriers historically marginalized university students face at our institutions and developing a hub of partners who are committed to ensuring the next generation of STEM professionals do the same. Most recently, Dr. Huffling worked with her team from Georgia Southern to develop and research a teacher professional development program for rural science teachers from watersheds that flowed into the Gulf of Mexico. Her current work explores how scientists, students, teachers, and community stakeholders can work together to create science learning environments where students and their communities can experience the coupling of individual and community funds of knowledge with science-driven data to address real-world environmental problems and injustices through the consideration of the impact of environmental disasters on science learning opportunities for students in vulnerable communities. She serves as an advisory board member for JBQ Charitable Foundation, which is committed to the development of professional capacity-building programs for pre-service educators in Peru. Dr. Huffling holds a B.S. in Biology and Ecology from Lee University, an M.Ed. in Science Education from Wake Forest University, and completed her Ph.D. in Educational Studies with a focus on Science and Environmental Education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
