Project Description
Dr. Lauren Fuess is an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at Texas State University. Her research investigates the causes and consequences of variation in animal immune responses. While she works with many different systems, she is particularly passionate about understanding the factors affecting disease susceptibility of reef-building corals. She received her B.S. in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston and then spent a year in Jamaica as a Fulbright full grant recipient. It was during this time that she developed a passion for working with Caribbean coral reefs. She then completed her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Arlington, funded in part by a fellowship from the National Science Foundation. Her work during this time included some of the first descriptions of Caribbean coral immunity. As a postdoc at the University of Connecticut, she took a break from coral research to develop her skillset in evolutionary immunology and develop advanced tools in comparative immunology. During her postdoc she was funded in part through a fellowship from the American Association of Immunologists. Now at Texas State University, Dr. Fuess leads a growing research lab which investigates factors driving variability in the response of vulnerable reef corals to disease outbreaks. Her lab is studying the effects of environmental variation and common restoration techniques on coral immunity. Additionally, her group is working to understand disease susceptibility of corals at Texas’s local Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
