Project Description
Mr. Varkony is a doctoral student at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. As a member of the Environmental Science and Policy department, he researches the social consequences of climate change with a particular focus on acutely vulnerable, lower resourced coastal communities. He has a BS degree in Mathematics and Economics and an MPS degree in Natural Disaster Analysis from the University of Miami. His dissertation work asks how hurricanes affect the accessibility to coastal communities for middle to lower income households. Mr. Varkony worked for the Office of Civic and Community Engagement developing a climate risk and affordable housing tool for Miami Dade County. He is passionate about understanding and mitigating the unique risks vulnerable communities face as a consequence of climate change. His goal is to build community climate resilience in an equitable and sustainable manner.
