Project Description
Mr. Martinez holds B.S. degrees in Marine Biology and Marine Fisheries from Texas A&M University at Galveston and is working to complete an M.S. degree in Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (to be completed summer 2021). Prior to entering the master’s program at VIMS, he worked as a platform removal observer on behalf of the National Marine Fisheries Service in the Gulf of Mexico. For his master's research, he is using molecular genetic techniques to characterize the stock structure of striped marlin (Kajikia audax) in the central North Pacific Ocean. While at VIMS, Mr. Martinez has served as Co-Chair of the Graduate Student Association’s Professional Development Committee and developed a K-12 lesson plan that introduces students to the identification of Chesapeake Bay fishes. He looks forward to working with diverse stakeholders and using the best-available science to inform policy and management decisions for our shared natural resources.
