Project Description
One of the key goals of the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies since its endowment in 2000 and opening its doors in 2005 was to support and advance the long-term sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of Mexico (GoMx), through its portal on Gulf of Mexico research resource, GulfBase.org. One of the early HRI projects was the Biodiversity of the Gulf of Mexico Project. HRI sponsored a comprehensive biotic inventory of the GoMx, and 140 taxonomic experts from 15 countries compiled a checklist, listing 15,419 species living in the GoMx.
