Project Description
This project will reduce the threat and impacts (e.g., entanglement, entrapment, and ingestion) of marine debris to birds and sea turtles injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill across the Gulf of Mexico states. The project involves removing marine debris including, but not limited to, derelict fishing gear (e.g., monofilament fishing line, nets, trap/pot gear, and other recreational/commercial fishing equipment that has been lost, abandoned, or discarded). This project entails a coordinated effort among Trustees, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and other partners to compile data on marine debris hotspots, conduct marine debris removal, engage in prevention through public education, and conduct monitoring. Funding for this joint project comes from the Regionwide TIG Birds and Sea Turtles Restoration Types.
