Project Description
Dr. Zito is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of New Orleans (UNO). She holds a Ph.D. (2014) from the University of New Orleans in Analytical Chemistry and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of South Florida. As an Assistant Professor at UNO, she teaches Environmental Chemistry to non-scientists and at the graduate level. Dr. Zito is passionate about mentoring and co-directs a 15-person research facility made up of chemistry students at all academic levels. She is a PI on studies involving the investigation, physicochemical interactions and environmental fate of nanomaterials in complex aquatic environments. She spent the past 7 years studying the photodissolution of petroleum in aquatic systems. This includes measuring rates, mechanisms and molecular-level transformations associated with photochemical processes governing dissolution and subsequent degradation of petroleum in aquatic environments. Her research focuses on applying a diverse array of analytical methods aimed at measuring compositional and optical changes after petroleum compounds are photodissolved and/or biodegraded into aquatic environments under varying conditions.
