Project Description
Dr. Zavar is an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Management & Disaster Science at the University of North Texas. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Geography from Texas State University, her M.A. in Geography from the University of California Los Angeles, and her B.A. in Geology from the College of Wooster. Dr. Zavar researches long-term community recovery from disasters including the ways in which communities reconstruct the built and natural environment to reduce risks to future hazards. Buyout programs are of particular interest to her, especially analyzing the design and management of post-buyout open space. Her research also examines the ways communities commemorate such tragedies as part of the long-term recovery process.
