Project Description
Bayfront Park is a publicly accessible outdoor recreation area located on Dauphin Island Parkway near the Alabama Port community. Phase I for this project included funds for engineering and design work to develop the concept to enhance Mobile County’s Bayfront Park and was funded by the Alabama Trustee Implementation Group (AL TIG) Restoration Plan (RP) I/Environmental Impact Statement Bayfront Park Restoration and Improvement (Engineering & Design only) project. The resulting master plan broke down construction activities into two phases, hereby known as Phases IIa and IIb. The project described in the Final RP III/Environmental Assessment will implement Phases IIa and IIb of shoreline recreational improvements developed under Phase I at Bayfront Park on Dauphin Island Parkway near the Alabama Port community. Enhancements will facilitate public access and improve recreational amenities. The 20-acre park, operated by the Mobile County Commission, currently receives more than 300 visitors on weekends and more than 1,200 visitors per week during the peak summer months. Recreational activities currently supported at this site include biking, playground use, fishing and crabbing, picnicking, walking, exercising, paddle sports such as kayaking, and bird watching. The park provides public access to Mobile Bay and other public amenities, such as a playground, picnic areas, and restrooms. The park also provides public access to the shoreline. The Mobile County Commission owns, maintains, and staffs the park. This project will fund implementation and construction of a number of shoreline and amenity improvements in the park.
