Project Description

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) worked with The Nature Conservancy to secure funding for the acquisition of Big Tree Ranch, an 80 acre tract in Aransas County, Texas. This land has extremely high conservation and recreation value, especially as habitat for the endangered Whooping Crane (Grus americana) and for public viewing of the crane. The entire tract is designated Whooping Crane critical habitat by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The property was transferred to TPWD to be operated and managed as part of the adjacent 330-acre Goose Island State Park (GISP).
