Project Description
The project will support state enforcement of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and increase Coastal Alabama Sea Turtle (CAST) protection in Alabama state waters through a variety of activities. First, it will increase public awareness and understanding of ESA regulations through education initiatives supporting state enforcement efforts. Second, it will increase state enforcement resources dedicated to sea turtle ESA-related activities. Third, it will identify and initiate steps to reduce sea turtle bycatch in state fisheries, through social science surveys and by purchasing and distributing Turtle Excluded Devices (TEDs) to skimmer trawl boats. Fourth, it will take steps to reduce human impacts on nesting turtles, such as nest vandalism and lighting harassment, through increased beach enforcement and outreach.
