Project Description

The project targeted the acquisition of approximately 1,682 acres of beach, dune, and tidal habitats on South Padre Island, Texas. This acquisition of important coastal habitat was completed in 2019 and the land was conveyed to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to be managed as part of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (LANWR). Approximately one-third of the final acquisition price was funded by the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Trustees. The project monitoring period began in 2020 and the final monitoring report is expected to be received in early 2021.
