Project Description
This project targeted the acquisition of important coastal habitat that was transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in June 2021 to be managed as part of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. This acquisition includes 1,512 acres of tidal wetlands, thorn scrub, and coastal prairie with more than a mile of frontage on the Lower Laguna Madre and almost two miles of frontage on a tidal inlet called Laguna Vista Cove. The estimated cost for the project was $6,900,000. Of this amount, the Deepwater Horizon's Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Texas Trustee Implementation Group (TX TIG) provided $2,241,000 for the acquisition.
