Project Description

Securement and enhancement of high quality Missouri Coteau wetlands and associated uplands support high densities of breeding waterfowl and staging shorebirds. By working in these areas, NCC-SK will maximize the benefits to 12 BP Priority Species by conserving core breeding and staging habitat: Mallard, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Canvasback, Redhead, Common Tern, Marbled Godwit, Piping Plover, Semipallmated Sandpiper, Dunlin, Short-Billed Dowitcher and Lesser Yellowlegs. The perpetual protection of 480 acres and enhancement of 522 acres of suitable breeding, feeding and staging habitat will have direct benefits for the targeted bird populations. This protected and enhanced habitat will ensure that breeding pairs will not lose their nests to damage by farm machinery and that grazing and haying activities are managed responsibly and for the benefit of waterfowl and shorebirds.
