Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD)
This project will create a new artificial reef site (Outer Continental Shelf Block Brazos BA-439) within Texas state waters in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 10 miles offshore of Matagorda County, Texas). The project will create a new artificial reef within the 160-acre permitted area, through deployment of predesigned concrete pyramids onto sandy substrate at a water depth of 60 feet. As required by the Endangered Species Act (ESA) consultation with National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the pyramid designs were modified so that one side of the constructed pyramids will be open on the top half to allow sea turtles to move freely in and out of the structure. This project will enhance recreational fishing opportunities.
