Project Description

An estimated 25 percent of coastal marsh within the Louisiana Chenier Plain has been lost through conversion to open water, diminishing wetland values and functions through saltwater intrusion. This project will protect existing healthy marsh from extended periods of high salinity or high water levels, and help restore degraded marsh to benefit all marsh-associated species of birds, fish and other wildlife by restoring the hydrology on 7,500 acres of estuarine intertidal wetlands in Vermilion Parish. The project will also restore approximately 5 miles of coastal shoreline using dredge sands from nearly 20 miles offshore in Cameron Parish, resulting in 1,316 (937 wetland, 379 upland) acres of improved coastal marsh habitat. Species that will benefit from this restoration effort include the Interior Least Tern, Piping Plover and Peregrine Falcon. Maintaining the ecological functionality of coastal wetlands provides societal benefits because wetlands store storm surge from major tropical storms, and filter nutrients from runoff.
